8 months lasting internship at Atelier Kanal Brussels
(won competition and project cooperation by Sergison Bates/London, EM2N/Zurich, noAarchitecten/Brussels).

Conversion of the former Citroën garage in Brussels to become the new KANAL-Centre Pompidou.

perspective

An international competition launched by the city of Brussels within 92 entries were submitted the proposal by Atelier Kanal succeded succesfully in 2018. The task: to transform Citroën’s former workshop from the 1930s into a cultural hub of the 21st century (budget of 125mil. €). In addition, many local and international partners, such as the Brussels Architecture Center or the Center Pompidou/Paris, have been brought on board to get a place on the new 35,000 m² stage for Brussels. Great importance is attached to the integration of the historical building structure, which was once designed as the largest service station in Europe by Alexis Dumont, Marcel van Goethem and the company’s own architecture department. The building, which is located directly on the shipping canal, is part of the development plan for the conversion of the inner-city, previously mainly industrial canal area.

During my internship, the project was in tender phase. My tasks were very diverse: from model building of facade alternatives to digital labeling of all facade openings. Most of the time, however, I was concerned with the inventory: from the on-site examination of existing construction details, comparing with archived plans, recording and the integration of suggestions for new interventions at these points in drawings.
