By chance, I came across the versatile offer of the non-profit organisation called Der Bauorden, which mediates social construction projects to international volunteers for over 60 years. Thanks to them, I was able to complete part of my construction site internship in Mülheim an der Ruhr for 2 weeks. Since 2008, a very dedicated association has been converting a listed locomotive repair shop into a meeting centre and educational centre alike. The industrial monument of 1874 features a unique wooden roof structure. We volunteers were mainly concerned with the application of wood preservatives on that roof truss. But also masonry (plastering) and glasswork (inserting glass in window) were done under the expert guidance of our older, very funny gentlemen from the Alte Dreherei, who dedicate a great part of their spare time to that building.
